SHASTA LAKE, Calif. – Deputies with the Shasta County Boating and Safety Unit spent Memorial Day Weekend on Shasta Lake.

Sergeant Rob Sandbloom said there were four Boating Under the Influence arrests and 42 Field Sobriety Test given.  

“Numerous citations and warnings were issued and several safety inspections were done.” 

Sandbloom mentioned they also conducted 125 safety equipment checks, meaning they looked for the proper amount of life-jackets and safety equipment on a boat.  

He says adults are not required to wear a life-jacket but the boat they are on is required to have one for every person on board.

“If the vessel is over 16-feet in length, [you need] a type four throw-able, [such as] square cushions or a round ring,” Sandbloom said. “Fire extinguishers are required, a sounding device and then any children under the age of 13 on the vessel have to have a life jacket on all the time.”

He said the weekend ended on a positive note with no drownings or deaths. 

The Sheriff’s Office explained that they stopped by Slaughterhouse Island where there were around 100 houseboats with college students. 

Sandbloom added the college students seemed a bit more toned down.
