The State Government has issued certain guidelines on introducing water sports such as boating, kayaking, skill development programmes and various other facilities for tourists in minor irrigation water bodies so as to promote employment opportunities for youth.
According to Principal Secretary (Irrigation) Vikas Raj, the government has formulated the guidelines following receipt of a number of representations from various organisations with the plea to issue permission for introducing water sports in minor irrigation tanks. “Since competing claims exist between multiple organisations for the same irrigation sources to introduce water sports and other tourism projects, evolving a clear policy with the objective criteria for selecting among the competing organisations was felt necessary,” the official said.
Besides, stringent eligibility criteria is required to be imposed as the water sports domain involves public safety, Mr. Vikas Raj said in the orders issued on Saturday. The State Government has decided to issue a policy for introducing water sports in minor irrigations tanks wherever feasible.
