Founder of Wild Birds Unlimited will be in Virginia Beach Friday | Blog | Mary Reid Barrow

Those of you who enjoy feeding our feathered friends, you can get your info straight from, er, the bird’s mouth on Friday.

Jim Carpenter, founder of Wild Birds Unlimited, will be at the Hilltop store in Virginia Beach from 11 a.m.  to 2 p.m. Friday to autograph his new book.

“The Joy of Bird Feeding. The Essential Guide to Attracting and Feeding our Backyard Birds,” is the title, just published earlier this year.

Carpenter’s 429-page book is like an encyclopedia of bird feeding, a handy reference for the back yard birder.

With almost 40 years of experience in figuring out what works and what doesn’t at back yard feeding stations, Carpenter surely has a ready answer for most of your questions.

The book includes a section on what to feed 180 feeder birds along with info on each bird.

Carpenter writes about dealing with pesky critters at your feeders, various feeder choices, the importance of water for birds and even how to improve your habitat so the birds will gravitate naturally to your yard.

Other sections include several chapters on bird feeding activities and tips for feeding birds in special places like retirement centers, apartments and condominiums.

After working in garden centers in the Indianapolis area, Carpenter opened his first Wild Birds Unlimited in 1981 and the rest is history.  There now are more than 300 Wild Birds Unlimited franchises around the United States.

And now his new book is a compilation of all that experience.

An autographed copy of “The Joy of Bird Feeding” would be a great  birthday or holiday gift for your bird loving friends.

And the time is always right for gifting yourself.  Your birds will thank you for that.
