As we approach the 2018 midterm elections, Democratic voters need clear, positive, progressive visions from candidates for office. I’ve recently found one such candidate: Jessica Holcombe.
She is running for congressional District 1 — Doug LaMalfa’s seat — which California Democrats should be dedicated to winning. Candidates will not take back the House or Senate, nor state legislatures and governor’s mansions, by being “not the other guy.” We need affirmative stances on the issues that matter. Holcombe is running on just such a platform: a living wage, universal health care, an expanded social safety net for low-income families, improvement of public schools, lower college tuition, a path to citizenship for immigrants, and a strengthened Social Security system. This is the positive vision we need from our Democratic leaders.
Further, she is eager to meet with voters, to talk with local organizations, students and community leaders. We need politicians who are responsive to their constituents, not those who refuse to meet with them, or who pack their “town hall” audiences with hand-picked supporters.
There will surely be a crowded field in this primary season. Take a good look at Holcombe and her platform.
